What a concert night looks like
There is no stage. The musicians set up in the corner by the window and play, usually without amplification .. the room is small enough that it is not needed. Standing at the back still puts you six metres from the singer.
The first set usually begins between 19.30 and 20.00, and there are normally two. Entry is free on virtually every night and there is no sign-up. There are also no reserved seats: if you want to sit down, come well before the start, because the room fills up around an hour before the music does.
The bar stays open between sets and people talk. This is not a concert hall where anyone shushes .. it is a bar with music in it, and the difference is noticeable. If you have come to listen closely, stand at the front. If you have come to drink wine with music behind it, there is room for that at the back.
Wine tastings
On some evenings we open bottles we have got excited about ourselves, with an importer or a grower standing alongside. It is not a course with notes and spittoons, but an evening where you taste five or six wines and get the story with them.
We run them when there is something worth running one for .. a house we have taken on, a vintage that surprised us, or someone who is in town anyway. That is why they do not sit in a fixed calendar. They are announced here and on Instagram, usually a couple of weeks ahead, and places are limited because the bar is small.
Copenhagen Jazz Festival
In July we take part in Copenhagen Jazz Festival, and then someone plays almost every day .. often twice, an early afternoon set and one in the evening. It is the week of the year with the most music in the house, and the room is full from early on.
The festival takes over the whole city, and the big names play the concert halls. We do the other kind: young names from the Copenhagen scene, acoustic, close up and free. The programme goes up here once it is settled.
What we host
Live music
Intimate concerts in the bar – local jazz names and visiting blues musicians. The room is close, the musicians play in the middle of it, and entry is free.
Wine tastings
Tastings where we open the bottles we are excited about and explain why. No exam, no spittoon solemnity.
Wine school
Informal wine school for anyone who wants to dig a layer deeper – what natural wine actually means, why a pét-nat sparkles, how to read a label.
Art exhibitions
The walls change as we go, with work from houses, artists and partners. For the coming period we are hanging with Peleton, the Danish poster house.
How to hear about it first
New nights go up here and on Instagram. If you would rather have them in your inbox, sign up to the newsletter .. we write rarely, and only when there is actually something.
Our own festival
Vester Blues is our own week of blues, jazz, folk and country. We run it ourselves, and it has its own site with the programme and sign-up.
